- Description: If you’ve spent time in Aarhus or Aalborg, you may already know Salling. Now the Danish department store is opening in the capital for the first time

On Friday 21 August, Salling opens a new 3,000 square metre store at Kultorvet, inside the former Copenhagen Main Library.

The name goes back to 1906, when Ferdinand Salling opened his first shop in Aarhus. Today, the department stores are a familiar part of both Aarhus and Aalborg, but until now, there has never been one in the capital.

Besides fashion, beauty and shoes, the new location will have a café, changing art exhibitions and spaces for talks and events.

And yes, there will be a rooftop.

In Aarhus and Aalborg, the rooftops have become popular places to stop for a drink, something to eat or simply a view over the city. The Copenhagen version will also be used for selected events during the summer.

“Retail today is about much more than products on shelves. People are looking for inspiration, experiences and places where they want to spend time,” says Marianne Bedsted, director of Salling.

## What’s happening on opening weekend

The celebrations start on Friday 21 August, with the outdoor area opening at 9.00 and the official ribbon cutting at 9.30 by Karin Salling. The store itself opens at 10.00, and the first 300 guests will get goodie bags.

More than 25 brands are taking part across Friday and Saturday with free beauty treatments, workshops, competitions and giveaways. There will also be live music from Jeuru and Lea Romea, DJ sets by Emilie Lilja and a talk with Mads Nørgaard and Andrea Elisabeth Rudolph, hosted by ELLE Denmark editor-in-chief Cecilie Ingdal.

A surprise act is also planned for Friday morning.

“Opening Salling in Copenhagen is a milestone for us. We have wanted for a long time to get closer to our many customers on Zealand,” Bedsted says.

This year also marks Salling’s 120th anniversary, dating back to Ferdinand Salling’s first shop in Aarhus in 1906.
