The best of Copenhagen heads north
Musik i Lejet is taking festival food seriously
Dining has become a big part of the experience at festivals across Denmark, and Musik i Lejet is no exception. From 16 to 18 July, some of Copenhagen’s strongest restaurant and street food names are heading north to Vejby, where they will join local suppliers and the festival’s own favourites.
Together, the line up comes close to being a food destination in its own right, rather than just a collection of festival stalls with more than 2o options. Here are some of the highlights we are most excited to try.
Møntergade and Apéro open a full restaurant
The two established Copenhagen favourites are bringing a complete restaurant set up, including a proper menu, bar, and a large sun terrace.
This is the place to sit down for a full meal between concerts, with seafood, classic brasserie dishes, good wine and smaller snacks from Apéro. The lobster vol-au-vent, seafood platter and bikini toast with caviar are high on our list, while the takeaway brisket burger sounds like the better choice when the next act is about to start.
Tables can be booked in advance, but walk ins might also be possible.
A symphony of lobster, brisket and pizzaslices
Elsewhere, Hummerhytten is serving lobster hotdogs and truffle fries, with the option to add fresh truffle or caviar. It may be excessive, but that extra level of festival food feels entirely in keeping with the Musik i Lejet vibe.
WarPigs, known for its large brewpub and restaurant in Kødbyen, brings its oak smoked Texas style BBQ to Vejby, including brisket, pulled pork and a vegetarian sandwich. Meanwhile, CHE TIPO heads up from Nørrebro with antipasti and crisp pizza al taglio. Both are easy choices when you want something solid without missing too much music.
No Danish festival is complete without the obligatory flæskestegssandwich, so we are also curious to try Smæskesteg, Musik i Lejet’s take on the classic roast pork sandwich. The original is made with free-range pork from Kødsnedkeren in Vejby, while the plant-based version comes with panko-fried tofu and BBQ miso sauce.
Among the other options, Gasoline Grill, La Trinacria, Crisp, Fiesta Mexican Cuisine, Aloha Bowls and Paradis Is bring burgers, Sicilian snacks, fried chicken, tacos, poké bowls and gelato to the festival, leaving plenty to choose from over the three days in North Zealand. Bon appétit!
