Today, Bella Center opens its doors to thousands of book lovers as Bogforum returns for three days dedicated to literature. Denmark's largest book festival brings together authors, publishers, illustrators and readers, with plenty to explore beyond the conversations on stage.

And while most of the programme is in Danish, international visitors shouldn't be discouraged.

“Bogforum presents a strong international program every year, and this year is no exception,” says Andreas Nordkild Poulsen, festival director of Bogforum.

Among this year's highlights are American cartoonist Art Spiegelman, whose Pulitzer Prize winning graphic novel Maus helped establish comics as a serious literary art form, and Japanese novelist Hiromi Kawakami, known for Strange Weather in Tokyo.

They are joined by writers and thinkers from across Europe, including German novelist Dörte Hansen and French author Olivier Haralambon.

“While most stage events are aimed at Danish readers, international voices remain an important and well established part of the programme,” Poulsen explains.

Beyond the stage

There is also plenty to explore at Bogforum beyond the scheduled talks and events.

Publishers large and small fill the exhibition halls with new releases, while book signings give visitors a chance to meet the people behind the stories.

At Bogforum Comics, visitors can explore graphic novels and illustrations, watch artists draw live and meet creators in Artist Alley, where they present and sell their own work.

For festival director Andreas Nordkild Poulsen, the appeal also lies in the atmosphere.

“Bogforum is first and foremost a celebration of books and reading. Beyond the international stage events, visitors can explore workshops, Cosplay, great food experiences, and the unique atmosphere that emerges when thousands of readers, authors, publishers, and book lovers come together around a shared passion for literature.”

So even if you arrive with no plans to buy anything, there's a good chance you'll find a book, art or something to eat that changes your mind.
