Carlo Ahead: Danish rap up close in Kødbyen

Following a packed show at Hotel Cecil earlier this year, Mund de Carlo and Ahead return to Copenhagen for a show at H15 with room for just 100 people

When Carlo Ahead played their first concert, the five musicians had only just met. Rapper Carlos Wind Demsitz, who goes by Mund de Carlo, met Ahead at soundcheck. The instrumental hip hop quartet had been playing together since 2017, working with different rappers and vocalists, but they had never rehearsed with the Nørrebro-based rapper. They played the show without a setlist, and it went so well that they decided to keep going.

As it turns out, they were onto something. They have now released two EPs and played several concerts together. Their latest EP, GRUS, received five stars from GAFFA, which called Mund de Carlo one of Denmark’s most skilled rappers and praised how Ahead’s playing brings out the best in him.

Watch the band at work

If you’re not already a fan, the best place to get to know Carlo Ahead may be in front of a stage. The drums are live, the bass and harmonies can shift, and Mund de Carlo has to find his way through the music as it happens.

This Thursday, they play at H15, an industrial venue in Kødbyen, known for its various and sometimes experimental concert programme. With around 100 tickets available, you’ll be close enough to catch the shifts in the music and move along with them.

Music as communication

For Demsitz, the exchange between musicians also has a place beyond the band’s own shows.

“Several members of the group also perform throughout Europe, often in situations where neither musicians nor audiences share a common spoken language. Jazz improvisation, rhythm and rap flow seem to have a vocabulary of their own,” he says.

"That idea, music as a language inside an international city, is something we’re increasingly interested in," he continues. Where that might take Carlo Ahead, we can only guess. For now, we get to hear them together right here in Copenhagen.
